Visas – General Requirements

Please read carefully. At the bottom of the page, click on the link that matches the purpose of your trip to Brazil.

		• If you are an American citizen, you are required to obtain a visa on your passport prior to entering Brazil. If you are not American, you can check if citizens of your country are exempted by clicking here.

		• If you are Brazilian, you should enter and leave Brazil on your Brazilian passport, without the need for a visa.

		• All applicants under 18 years of age must provide a notarized letter of consent (see form here) signed by both parents or legal guardian authorizing the Consulate to issue a visa, as well as a copy of the minor's birth certificate.

		• The passport presented at the Consulate with your visa application must be valid for at least another 6 months, must have at least one blank visa page available and you must have signed it on page 3.

		• The visa fee must be paid with a Money Order or Certified Check made out to the Brazilian Consulate. Cash, cards and personal checks are not accepted. Specific information on visa fees and required documents can be found in the links below.

		• If you cannot come to the Consulate in person, the application can be submitted by a third party, such as a friend, a relative or a visa agency. An additional absentee fee of $20.00 is charged if you do not bring your application in person. Such fee is waived if you are applying on behalf of an immediate relative (spouse, son, daughter, father, mother, brother or sister).

		• If you wish to send your application by mail, you must be a resident of our consular jurisdiction, which includes the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island. In addition, your signature on the application and all copies of documents must be notarized. The Consulate reserves the right to call you for an interview.

		• Plan your visa application in advance, as it takes the Consulate up to two weeks to issue a visa, if the application is sent by mail or visa agency, and one week if applied in person. Longer periods may apply, especially during the summer and holidays. There are no rush or emergency fees. Visas cannot be issued on the same day the application is received.

		• If you are an American citizen and you are applying for a tourist or business visa, you may use our drop off service, every business day from 9 am to 12 noon. All other visa applications are received at the Consulate every business day from 9 am to 12 noon, by appointment or without an appointment. The Consulate strongly advises appointments to be made as to avoid a long waiting time. The consular agent will tell you the date and time your passport will be returned and will hand you a receipt. On the specified date, anyone can pick up the passport on your behalf, provided that he has the receipt. Or, if you prefer to receive it back by mail, you can provide the Consulate with an express mail prepaid return envelope.

		• If your passport expires, but your Brazilian visa in it is still valid, you can get a new passport (from the authorities of your country) and carry both the new (valid) passport and the old one (with the visa) when you travel to Brazil.

		• As of May 2010, Brazil does not require a yellow fever International Certificate of Vaccination for entering the country.
